When you connect to the Internet with your home computer, you do so through a third party called an Internet  Service Provider (ISP).

Your ISP provides you with a connection to the World Wide Web through either a Modem which is probably already built into your computer, or if you want a faster connection that doesn't tie up the telephone line, a Broadband Modem, which will cost you a little more money each month.

Along with your connection to the WWW your ISP usually throws in some storage space for you to keep (host) your personal web pages or web site.  Companies like Blueyonder or Tiscali give you about 30 million bytes of space for free with your monthly subscription which is quite a lot of space for the home user.

There are also literally thousands of companies who will host your pages for you either for free or by subscription.

Ok so you've got a connection and you've got some space. What do you do next?

There several ways to construct your web pages:

You can learn the language of the web called HTML short for Hypertext Markup Language, this is great for the enthusiast and can become a very addictive hobby.

You can use editing programs like Microsoft FrontPage or Dreamweaver.  These programs will allow you to type stuff directly into the computer, insert pictures etc, and the program then converts it into the HTML language for you thus saving a lot of time and effort.

Or of course you can get someone to do it for you.

Lets assume that you have done all of the aforementioned  and you now have a web page like the one you are currently reading.  If you look at the address bar above this page you will notice the URL of this page:

What is a URL?

Uniform Resource Locater , simply put, its the address on the

World Wide Web where your web pages live.

The HTTP:// part is an instruction for the World Wide Web.

The WWW.  says that the page is on the World Wide Web

The freetipson.co.uk is my Domain name (the name of my webspace)

healthcare is the name of the folder where I placed my page.

And submissions.html is the name that I called this page.

So! You've finally made your page and it looks great on your home computer.

Now you need to upload the page from your computer to your webspace.

You do this using a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) program like Cute or Terrapin.  Once you have done this you will have a URL for the page.

If you type this URL directly into the address bar of your web browser say Internet Explorer for instance, your web page will pop up on the screen in all of its glory.

This is Ok if you know the URL of your page but if you wanted to find the page by using a facility such as Google for instance, then the page URL needs to be registered with them so that strangers can also find it.

Ok scroll back up to the top of the page and type, or copy and paste your complete URL into the small black box and follow the on screen instructions.

The first time that you visit the site you will have to provide them with a few details like email address and a password, but there is no catch and the service is out of this world.

The page you will connect to is called Dream Submit, if you are a newbie choose the Free Package that they offer , or if you want to be registered with thousands of different companies then for a small annual fee they can also do that for you.

Best of luck

Tony.
